1935年，在民族危亡的緊急關(guān)頭，清華大學(xué)學(xué)生在中國(guó)共產(chǎn)黨的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)下，同其他學(xué)校一起發(fā)動(dòng)了劃時(shí)代的“一二.九”運(yùn)動(dòng)，走上了抗日救亡的第一線。許多優(yōu)秀學(xué)生在抗日戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)中顯出了年輕的生命，一批“一二.九”運(yùn)動(dòng)中的骨干，經(jīng)過(guò)革命斗爭(zhēng)的錘煉，成長(zhǎng)為新中國(guó)各個(gè)方面的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人。 抗日戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)時(shí)期，清華大學(xué)、北京大學(xué)、南開(kāi)大學(xué)組成的西南聯(lián)合大學(xué)，繼承中國(guó)學(xué)生光榮的革命傳統(tǒng)，被譽(yù)為“大后方的民主堡壘”�？谷諔�(zhàn)爭(zhēng)勝利后，為了反對(duì)國(guó)民黨反對(duì)派的獨(dú)裁統(tǒng)治和內(nèi)戰(zhàn)政策，西南聯(lián)大的師生與1945年12月，發(fā)動(dòng)了聲勢(shì)浩大的“一二.一”運(yùn)動(dòng)，在全國(guó)掀起了爭(zhēng)民主反內(nèi)戰(zhàn)的熱潮。

He stood out splendidly above all my uncles because he did not stand out at all. That was his distinction. He was the averagest man I ever knew. you should never pick him out in a crowd. They slide along without having to do any thing about it as small boys do on their breeches after they have slid on them enough to wear them down smooth. The world is all so much pine needles under them. Uncle Amos was easy on his wives and children. He had three of them , in all. Wives, I mean. I never did get the count of his children straight, there were too many assortments of myself, having to stand on my head and work my legs, or bung stones at cherry birds, to keep the attention of just one girl for a month.
