11月2日晚，阿拉伯聯(lián)合酋長國總統(tǒng)扎耶德因病逝世，享年86歲。扎耶德曾任阿布扎比酋長國東部省省長20年，1966年推翻其兄沙赫布特成為阿布扎比酋長國酋長。1971年扎耶德倡導成立阿拉伯聯(lián)合酋長國，并當選為開國總統(tǒng)，任期5年，此后6次連任。外電報道如下：
United Arab Emirates President and founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan died on Tuesday, his office announced, reports AFP.
"The president"s office mourns with the people of the United Arab Emirates and the Arab and Islamic nations the leader of the nation and president... His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan, who passed away on Tuesday evening, November 2," the announcement said.
Highness與His，Her或Your連用，用來稱呼王子（親王）或公主（王妃），在這里表示“殿下”。例如：Her Royal Highness the Princess Margaret（瑪格麗特公主殿下）。
扎耶德?lián)慰偨y(tǒng)期間，對內主張加強國家的統(tǒng)一和團結，大力發(fā)展國民經(jīng)濟，提高人民生活水平；對外奉行中立不結盟政策，主張阿拉伯和海灣國家的團結與合作，實現(xiàn)海灣的和平與穩(wěn)定。在扎耶德的倡導下，海灣合作委員會1981年宣告成立。扎耶德所奉行的內政外交政策，得到國內外廣泛贊譽，他本人也深受阿聯(lián)酋人民愛戴。
