What saved the man’s life? (Actually, it was the man’s food that saved the man’s life when the thieves found it. With the man’s food, these thieves ran away. ) Understand the organization of the text: The passage presents the BASIC pattern of situation-problem-evaluation. The organization of the reading passage is a variation of that BASIC pattern: Situation + problem ↓ Sequential details of the problem ↓ Responses ↓ Comments and evaluation Division of the text: The text should be divided into four parts: Part I (para. 1) In spite of my cautiousness, someone attacked me. Part II (para.2-25) I was robbed by two young men, losing my money, watch and chicken. Part III (para.26-31) Back at home, I reported the robbery to the police and they looked into the case. Part IV (para.32-34) When looking through the mug shots at the station, I began to reflect on the damages these young people have done to our society. Structure Analysis The writer of the short story presents its details in a very clear way, especially with a set of sequential actions. Paragraphs 1 and 28 are very good examples of this kind of structure or writing method. Here are some points for your attention: 1. Description of sequential actions is a very common way to tell a story. 2. Sequential actions are normally set up in order of importance and the last one normally is most important to the message the writer wants to express. 3. Sequential actions should be carefully chosen and put in order so as to bring out the idea. Description of sequential actions sometimes appears to be similar to writing according to a time sequence. The difference between the two is that sequential actions lay stress on a set of actions while time sequence emphasizes the time order often with time signals. Background Information 1. How the Chimney-sweeper’s cry Every black’ning Church appalls; And the hapless Soldier’s sigh Runs in blood down Palace walls.
